# Regional panchang - Gowri, Disha Shool, Chandrashtama, Tara and Chandra Bala, Pancha Pakshi

These are the parts of a daily panchang that [`/vedic/panchang/full`](/en/vedic/panchang/) does not cover: the Tamil Gowri Panchangam, the direction to avoid for travel, the Moon's bad days for one person, the person's Tara and Chandra Bala, and the five-bird Pancha Pakshi. Each day runs from sunrise to the next sunrise at the place you send, as a printed panchang counts it.

Every time is a local ISO date-time with the offset, for example `2026-11-07T17:15:20+05:30`. Send `timezoneOffset` in hours, or `timezone` with an IANA name such as `Asia/Kolkata`.

## Endpoints

| Endpoint | Credits | Returns |
|---|---|---|
| `/v1/vedic/panchang/gowri` | 20 | 8 day and 8 night Gowri segments with name and quality, and the Nalla Neram windows |
| `/v1/vedic/panchang/disha-shool` | 5 | Direction to avoid on the weekday, the remedy item and the week table |
| `/v1/vedic/panchang/chandrashtama` | 20 | Chandrashtama spans of one person over up to 366 days |
| `/v1/vedic/panchang/chandrashtama/day` | 20 | Which rashis and nakshatra padas have Chandrashtama on the day |
| `/v1/vedic/panchang/tara-bala` | 20 | The person's tara for each nakshatra of each day, up to 31 days |
| `/v1/vedic/panchang/chandra-bala` | 20 | The Moon's house from the natal Moon for each day, up to 31 days |
| `/v1/vedic/panchang/pancha-pakshi` | 20 | Paksha, 10 yamas with every bird's activity, the person's sub-periods |

The person for Chandrashtama, Tara Bala and Chandra Bala is either `birth` (birth data; the sidereal Moon is computed from it) or the values themselves: `janmaRashi` (`Mesha` to `Meena`) and `janmaNakshatra` (1 Ashwini to 27 Revati).

## Gowri Panchangam (Gowri Nalla Neram)

The day from sunrise to sunset and the night from sunset to the next sunrise are each cut into 8 equal segments, named by the weekday. Amirdha, Uthi, Laabam, Dhanam and Sugam are good, Rogam, Soram and Visham bad. `nallaNeram` lists the good segments with neighbours merged into one window. It does not subtract Rahu Kalam, which some Tamil calendars do; take it from [`/vedic/panchang/rahu-kaal`](/en/vedic/panchang/) if you need that.

## Disha Shool

The direction in which a journey should not start on the weekday: Monday and Saturday east, Thursday south, Sunday and Friday west, Tuesday and Wednesday north, after the verse "Shani Chandre tyajet purvam, dakshinam cha Brihaspatau, Surya Shukre pashchimam, Budha Bhaume tathottaram". `remedy` is the item a North Indian panchang names to eat before leaving when the journey cannot wait (ghee on Sunday, milk on Monday, jaggery on Tuesday, and so on); those lists differ between almanacs, and `remedyNote` names the common alternative. Only the weekday of `date` is used, so no place is needed.

## Chandrashtama

Chandrashtama is the time the Moon spends in the 8th sign from the natal Moon sign, about two and a quarter days every 27. `/chandrashtama` lists those spans for one person over `days` (1 to 366, default 30) from local midnight of `date`. A span crossing the edge of the range keeps its real start or end.

```json
{
  "janmaRashi": "Kumbha",
  "chandrashtamaRashi": "Kanya",
  "periods": [
    { "start": "2026-11-05T09:34:46+05:30", "end": "2026-11-07T17:15:20+05:30", "hours": 55.68 }
  ]
}
```

`/chandrashtama/day` answers the other question, the one a Tamil daily sheet prints: who has Chandrashtama today. For each Moon sign between sunrise and the next sunrise it gives the rashi and its nakshatra padas, for example `Kumbha` with Dhanishtha 3-4, Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada 1-3.

## Tara Bala and Chandra Bala

**Tara Bala** counts from the birth star to the day's star and folds the count into nine taras: Janma, Sampat, Vipat, Kshema, Pratyak, Sadhaka, Vadha, Mitra, Parama Mitra. Sampat, Kshema, Sadhaka, Mitra and Parama Mitra are good; Vipat, Pratyak and Vadha bad; Janma is returned as `mixed` and is not counted as `favourable`. Each period also carries `count` (1 to 27) and `cycle` (1 to 3), since some texts treat the same tara differently in the second and third round.

**Chandra Bala** is the Moon's house counted from the natal Moon sign: 1, 3, 6, 7, 10 and 11 are good. House 8 is flagged as `chandrashtama`. Some texts also accept 2, 5 and 9 in Shukla Paksha; that is not applied, and `rule` says so.

Both take `date`, `days` (1 to 31) and a place, and return one entry per day with a period for every nakshatra or Moon sign in it.

## Pancha Pakshi

The Tamil five-bird system: Vulture, Owl, Crow, Cock and Peacock. The day and the night are each five yamas; in every yama each bird does one of five activities, from strongest to weakest ruling, eating, walking, sleeping and dying. The table depends on the weekday and on the paksha, taken at sunrise.

Without a person the response gives every bird's activity in each yama. With one it also gives that bird's `activity` and the five `subPeriods` of every yama, one per bird in the traditional order, each as long as its activity's share of the yama. Name the person by:

- `bird` (`vulture`, `owl`, `crow`, `cock`, `peacock`), which wins over the others;
- `birth`, from which the birth star and the paksha at birth are computed;
- `janmaNakshatra` with `birthPaksha` (`shukla` or `krishna`).

**Caution:**
**Sources.** The yama tables reproduce drikpanchang.com's Pancha Pakshi pages, checked yama by yama in Chennai and New Delhi; drik names no edition of the Pancha Pakshi Shastra, and we could not check one. The birth bird follows the grouping most Tamil manuals print (stars 1-5, 6-11, 12-16, 17-21, 22-27 for Vulture, Owl, Crow, Cock, Peacock in Shukla Paksha, reversed in Krishna Paksha), but other groupings are in print. If your tradition uses another, send `bird`. The response says this in `source` and `basis: "manual"`.
