Vedic Prashna - chart of the question, Arudha, number Prashna, yes/no indicators
Prashna is Vedic horary: the chart is cast for the moment and place a question is asked. These endpoints follow two classical works. Prasna Marga, the Kerala manual, supplies the chart points: the Arudha the querent indicates, the Udaya Lagna rising at the time, Chatra, Gulika and Mandi and the sphutas built from them. Prasna Tantra of Neelakanta supplies the yes/no rules, which use Tajika aspects and yogas (Ithasala, Easarapha, Kamboola).
Every point and every rule carries its source: the work, the chapter and the stanza, and whether the stanza itself says it (verse), the translator’s notes say it (note), a later source does (secondary), or it is our reading where the text is silent (convention).
Endpoints
Section titled “Endpoints”| Endpoint | Credits | What |
|---|---|---|
/v1/vedic/prashna/chart | 20 | Chart of the question with the Prasna Marga points |
/v1/vedic/prashna/analysis | 20 | Prasna Tantra indicators for one category, with a tally |
/v1/vedic/prashna/number | 10 | A querent’s number read as a sign: 1-108 navamsa, or the Ashtamangala number |
KP number horary (1-249) stays on /v1/vedic/kp/horary. A number above 108 sent here is refused with a pointer to it.
Request
Section titled “Request”The moment and place of the question: date, time (local), timezoneOffset or timezone, latitude, longitude, and the ayanamsa (ayanamsa by name or ayanamsaId, Lahiri by default; B.V. Raman’s own examples use raman).
| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
arudhaSign | 1 Aries .. 12 Pisces: the sign of the direction the querent faces or the square of the chakra the querent touches (Prasna Marga II.7-11) |
number | 1-108: the navamsa of this number fixes the Arudha sign. Send arudhaSign or number, not both |
sphutaGulika | mandi (default) or gulika: which point enters Trisphuta. The Prasna Marga author takes Gulika by the Mandi method (translator’s note to V.14-16) |
category | analysis only: relationship, career, travel, lost-item, litigation, general |
With neither arudhaSign nor number, the Udaya Lagna stands in for the Arudha, as Prasna Marga IX.30-31 directs when the Arudha cannot be fixed, and arudha.source says udaya.

udayaLagna | sidereal ascendant at the question time, with its lord and whether the sign is Sirshodaya | Prasna Marga V.1 |
navamsaLagna | the navamsa sign of the Udaya Lagna | |
arudha | the given sign, the sign of the 1-108 number, or the Udaya Lagna; sphuta is the Arudha sign plus the Lagna’s degrees | II.7-11, V.32 |
chatra | count from the Arudha to the Lagna and the same from the Veethi Rasi (Aries for the Sun in Taurus to Leo, Gemini for Scorpio to Aquarius, Taurus otherwise); with no Arudha, the navamsa of the Udaya Lagna | IX.34, notes to VIII.1 |
gulika | the ascendant at the end of Saturn’s eighth of the day (or night, counted from the fifth weekday lord); startOfPart gives the start of the part, the BPHS convention | notes to V.14-16 |
mandi | the ascendant at 26, 22, 18, 14, 10, 6, 2 ghatis after sunrise (Sunday onwards), at night 10, 6, 2, 26, 22, 18, 14 after sunset, scaled to the real length of the day or night | notes to V.14-16 |
sphutas | Trisphuta = Lagna + Moon + Gulika; Chatussphuta = Trisphuta + Sun; Panchasphuta = Chatussphuta + Rahu | V.17-18 |
The day runs from sunrise to sunrise, so a question before dawn belongs to the night of the previous weekday. Where the Sun does not rise or set the day cannot be divided and the call answers 422. Planets are taken at the question time, houses are whole signs from the Udaya Lagna, and each planet carries its dignity and whether it is combust.
Analysis
Section titled “Analysis”The category picks the house of the question and its lord, the significator: relationship 7th, career 10th, travel 9th, lost-item 4th, litigation 7th (the opponent), general the ascendant itself. Every response lists the checked indicators { id, rule, effect, fired, observed, source }, then:
tally: fired favourable and unfavourable indicators with equal weights (ours: the texts give none) andleaningsuccessGrade: 25, 50, 75 or 100 per cent by Prasna Tantra II.5-8timing: immediate or delayed by II.10-12
| Indicator | Prasna Tantra |
|---|---|
| The house of the question joined or aspected by its lord or a benefic; by a malefic | II.1 |
| Benefics or malefics in the ascendant; a Sirshodaya ascendant | II.2 |
| Lagna lord and significator connected by aspect, or the Moon aspecting both | II.3-4 |
| Lagna lord or significator afflicted or combust | II.9 |
| Significator not aspecting the ascendant or its lord | II.13 |
| Lagna and Moon both weak | II, first house 1 |
| Ithasala and Easarapha between the Lagna lord and the significator; Kamboola with the Moon | IV.54-56, IV.61 |
| Marriage: 7th lord in Ithasala with the Lagna lord or the Moon, Lagna lord or Moon in the 7th, malefic 8th lord, hostile aspect | II.62-67 |
| Journey: Lagna lord in a kendra in Muthasila with the 9th lord or a planet in the 3rd, malefics in kendras | II.95-97 |
| Profession: Lagna lord or Moon in the ascendant in Muthasila with the 10th lord, exchange of the two lords | II.108-109 |
| Lost property: 4th lord in the ascendant, or the Moon there aspected by it; malefics in the 4th | III.76-77 |
| Dispute: malefics in the ascendant favour the querent; weak Lagna lord; weak 7th lord in the 6th | III.153, notes to II.67-69 |
Aspects are Tajika, by sign: the 5th and 9th and the 3rd and 11th are friendly, the 4th and 10th and the 7th hostile (IV.49-51). Ithasala is the faster planet behind the slower one within the orb, by degrees within the sign; the orb of a pair is half the sum of their orbs of light (IV.52-53). Four points are conventions and are labelled so: that half-sum, Mercury as a benefic unless joined by a malefic and the Moon as a benefic while waxing, the combustion orbs (Mercury 14 per Prasna Tantra’s chapter I note, the others from the Surya Siddhanta), and our reading of the II.5-8 grades.
Number Prashna
Section titled “Number Prashna”system: "navamsa108" (default) reads 1-108 as the navamsas of the zodiac from 0 Aries: 45 is the ninth navamsa of Leo, the Sagittarius navamsa. This mapping is Kerala practice; Prasna Marga Part I does not give it, and the response says so. system: "ashtamangala" reads the Prasna Marga number: three digits, each 1-8 from a heap of cowries with the multiples of 8 removed (IV.54-55). Each digit gives a planet (1 Sun, 2 Mars, 3 Jupiter, 4 Mercury, 5 Venus, 6 Saturn, 7 Moon, 8 Rahu) for the past, present and future, odd favourable and even unfavourable (VII.1, 3-6); the remainders by 30, 27, 7, 12 and 5 give the tithi, nakshatra, weekday, rasi and bhuta (VII.32-34).

- Prasna Tantra, example VI (marriage, 6 November 1962, 9:20 IST, Bangalore). Reproduced: Jupiter and Mercury in Ithasala, the Moon in Ithasala with both (Kamboola) and 9 degrees behind Jupiter, Mercury combust, Saturn in Ithasala with Mercury. Not reproduced: the book also counts Mars and Mercury in Ithasala, 10.5 degrees apart against a 7.5 degree mean orb.
