Remedies (upaya)

Last updated View as Markdown Agent setup

Upaya (उपाय) is a remedy for a graha that is weak or afflicted, or for a dosha. Most remedy lists online mix three layers without saying which is which: what a classical text prescribes, what modern manuals add, and what a particular school teaches. Here every item carries its source and a basis:

  • classical: the cited text has it. The graha shanti comes from BPHS ch. 84, checked line by line against the Yajnavalkya Smriti, which gives the same lists in the same order.
  • modern-popular: current practice, with the nearest documented source named. Beeja mantras, the mukhi-to-graha map for rudraksha, weekday fasts, the per-graha yantras.

Gemstones and Lal Kitab upayas are not repeated here: the items point at Ratna and /v1/vedic/lal-kitab/remedies, which already own them.

POST /v1/vedic/remedies/chart20From a birth chart: the weak or afflicted grahas, the doshas present, their remedies, and why each graha was selected

type is one of mantra, puja, deity, yantra, rudraksha, fasting, charity, colour, gemstone, lal-kitab. The three lookups take it as an optional filter; the chart route takes types as an array in the body.

Grahas: sun, moon, mars, mercury, jupiter, venus, saturn, rahu, ketu. Doshas: mangal, kaal-sarp, pitru, sade-sati, grahan, shrapit, guru-chandal, kemadruma.

Each dosha says plainly whether it exists in the classical texts (classicalStatus). Kaal Sarp, Shrapit and Guru-Chandal do not: they are later doctrines, and their remedies are those of the grahas involved. Where BPHS has a rite for a related trigger, it is returned in specific with a note saying what it was written for:

  • Pitru: BPHS 83.31-33 (curse of the father: shraddha at Gaya) and 83.106-108 (a parent’s shraddha left undone: pinda dana, Rudra abhisheka).
  • Kaal Sarp: BPHS 83.17-19, the rite for the serpent curse. BPHS does not name Kaal Sarp; applying this rite to it is later practice, and the item says so.
  • Grahan: BPHS 91.1-14, the rite for a birth during an eclipse, which is rarer than the natal conjunction the dosha detector reports.
  • Kemadruma: classical (BPHS 37.11-13), but no remedy is given there.

POST /v1/vedic/remedies/chart selects a graha when any of these fires, and lists every reason that fired:

  1. Shadbala below the BPHS 27.32-33 requirement: 390 virupa for the Sun, 360 Moon, 300 Mars, 420 Mercury, 390 Jupiter, 330 Venus, 300 Saturn. The numbers are those of /vedic/shadbala/full.
  2. Debilitated, in sidereal signs.
  3. Combust, with the orbs /vedic/gemstones uses.
  4. Forms a present dosha: Mangal, Kaal Sarp, Pitru, Shrapit, Grahan, Guru-Chandal as on /vedic/doshas/parashara/full; Kemadruma by BPHS 37.11-13; Sade Sati on targetDate (today when omitted).

Rahu and Ketu have no Shadbala, so they are selected only through a dosha. checked shows every graha against its requirement and every dosha’s result, so you can see what did not fire as well. The route does not rank remedies or say which to perform.

  • Graha shanti: BPHS ch. 84 in the 97-chapter numbering of the common English text (ch. 86 in the G.C. Sharma 2006 edition), against Yajnavalkya Smriti, Acharadhyaya 1.297-1.306. Image materials, Vedic mantras, samidh and dakshina agree between the two in order. Mars japa is 11000 in that translation and 10000 in many manuals; both are returned.
  • Curses and eclipse birth: BPHS ch. 83 and ch. 91.
  • Rudraksha: the deity of each mukhi is the Shiva Purana’s (Vidyeshvara Samhita ch. 25). Which mukhi belongs to which graha is modern practice, not the Purana.
  • Left out because no source could be pinned: the grain dear to each graha, the numbers inside the navagraha yantras, a fasting day for Rahu and Ketu, stotras attributed to particular Puranas without a checked reference.
